The three phases of yarn, assigned using entropic considerations. The yarn is Lumpy Bumpy from Farmhouse, colorway Kaliedescope. I've always been amazed by the way the color shifts in space-dyed and variegated yarns during the phase changes. More on this later.
Now that you mention it ...
Maryse and Mafia, thanks for encouraging my geekiness.
Dorothy, "solid" and "liquid" are the same skein, but "gas" is different. Since the colors of Farmhouse Yarns do seem to vary from skein to skein, I cannot promise that the comparison is exact. But its close.
Colleen, I agree completely, at least at my level of training. I'm hoping that after another ten years or so I can learn to better predict. It's important to have goals. you know?
Heather, I could introduce a cat, which would lend the required amount of kinetic energy.
Rebecca, your variegated socks always look so lovely. Do you have the third eye for identifying a good variegated yarn?

That's a gorgeous colorway. I've noted the same thing you have, but didn't think of comparing it to gas/liquid/solid states.

excellent! but because of the kinetic energy of the gas, it should be spinning or bouncing ;-)
Some how, unfortunately, I think the brilliance of this analogy would be lost on my students, but it made this teacher smile!

This is exactly why you can't tell a single thing from the yarn in the skein.

A very good representation! It doesn't look like it came from the same skein does it?
